Greenhorn Ranch

Greenhorn Ranch is our only ranch in Northern California since Coffee Creek was sadly burnt down in the Californian fires of 2021. As a dude ranch, it offers all the traditional ranch activities but you can also enjoy fishing, clay pigeon shooting, fat-tyre electric mountain biking, archery, yoga and perhaps best of all whiskey tastings! The ranch is in the little known and well-named Lost Sierra, but is not far from Reno so is easy to combine with other better-known attractions such as Yosemite National Park, San Francisco or even Disney! Greehorn, surrounded by 500,000 acres of wild terrain, has around 60 horses and can match your skill level whether you are a complete beginner or have been riding all your life. You will have two daily guided trail rides which will vary from a gentle ride along the Greenhorn Creek or up the mountain for stupendous views from Lyle’s Meadow. Children are also entertained (with parental supervision) whether on a leading rein, wagon rides horseshoe painting or even gold panning.

But as mentioned, riding is not the only activity at the Greenhorn Ranch, they provide fly-fishing rods for the local lake trout or you can explore over 20 glacially-carved alpine lines in the nearby Lake Basic Recreation Area or even a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail that stretches from Canada to Mexico and just happens to pass by the ranch. If you want to let the bike take the strain, the guides will lead on an electric bike along the forested logging paths. Golfers are even catered for – there are four courses within 30 minutes of the ranch and while green fees are not included, the ranch can negotiate a discounted rate for you. Some will even come and collect you if you have not hired a car.

With all this energy being expended, your inner self will need fuelling. Greenhorn prides itself on its fresh local produce, ample portions and good company. Accommodation is either in the roomy lodge, a cosy cabin or even a restored Airstream camper.

The ranch will collect you from Reno Airport for a fee, but with all the Californian attractions around you, you might rather hire a car – the choice is of course yours, we will just make it happen.
