Kay El Bar Ranch

Kay El Bar Ranch is an intimate, historic guest ranch in the heart of the Wild West in the Sonoran Desert, in the shadow of the Hassayampa River Canyon Wilderness. Nearby Hassayampa Hill offers desert vistas and unforgettable sunsets. Only a little over 1 hour northwest of Phoenix, it is a great stop on the way up to the Grand Canyon area and beyond.

Life at the Kay El Bar centres around the horses and riding program, and there is a well-trained string of horses suitable for every experience level. Favourable weather, varied terrain, and spectacular scenery make Kay El Bar ideal for some of the finest horseback riding anywhere. Riding is done on endless trails through federal lands adjoining the ranch. Ride through the wash of the Hassaymapa River beneath sheer canyon walls or climb rocky ridges for spectacular mountain views. Cattle work demonstrations and Team Penning are also available. In Team Penning groups divide into teams and work together to separate and move specifically identified cattle from the herd to another area of the arena. There are a few restrictions for potential riders; riders must weigh less than 240 pounds, and trail riding starts with children 5 years and older (8 years and older for fast rides).

Other activities include: fat tire electric bike tours, sport shooting, hiking, stargazing, bird watching, a heated swimming pool & hot tub, evening campfires, games and puzzles available in the main lodge.

Accommodations are comfortable and charming, with each guest room and each room in main lodge has a private modern bath, hand-painted Monterey furniture, custom cowboy bedspreads and drapes, and a collection of western artwork. In addition there are larger Casita options, making an overall guest capacity approximately 25.

There’s a social hour every evening in the lodge; it’s a great way to swap stories and mingle with fellow guests and the wranglers. The ranch offers great home cooked western fare. Dinner is served family style in the dining room or on the patio. Savor home-cooked goodness, including garden vegetables and crisp salads and warm rolls, as well as choice meats, fish and poultry. Due to state law, no outside alcohol is permitted on property. The ranch offers a private licensed bar with an excellent selection of alcoholic beverages for purchase. The friendly staff make it easy to become part of the Kay El Bar family.
