Rocking Z Ranch

This small family run ranch is only 8 miles west of the Gates of Mountains, giving easy access to the towering splendour of the famous Rocky Mountains and Montana’s wide open prairies.  Four generations of Wirths have ranched in this area since 1863 and have owed the property since 1952.  The ranch operates the Parelli method of natural horsemanship and this allows horse lovers at all levels and disciplines to achieve success without force, you can do as much or as little Parelli as you wish, but rest assured all the family are Parelli enthusiasts, so if it’s a Parelli lesson you want its all included, or if you simply want to ride over the constraining terrain with many challenging trails and open riding you can. 

Guests can experience a broad range of Parelli trained horses which are almost all trained on the ranch, and if guests are experienced they may be able to go on faster rides.  You will be encouraged to saddle your own horse and become involved in the everyday ranch chores.  One day each week cattle are herded from one pasture to the next or brought to the arena for team penning.

Family meals feature the ranch’s own beef, vegetables, home baked bread and pies, and as the ranch owners are Gluten free they are used to catering for special dietary needs and the kitchen is always open, if you fancy a coffee, and don’t forget the fresh cookies and fruit that you will always find available.The ranch also has team of Perchons so guests are able to experience a hayride if they wish, as well as other activities such as, hiking, swimming in the creek, volleyball, roping, shooting and fly fishing which takes place in the Little Prickly Pear Creek on the ranch or on the Missouri River, where you can catch brown and rainbow trout.

During July and August guests are often taken to rodeos in the area and after a long day, sore muscles can be soaked in the ranch hot tub, or you can simply chill out in the ranch saloon and play cards, listen to music or play a game of pool.
